  saffuna: OK, I'll bite:

What if black plays 29...Kxe8?

saffuna: All right. I guess Qe4 followed by Qa8+.

The h8 rook was worse than useless.

FSR: Carlsen had won their first round game, so Pantsulaia had to figure out a way to win as Black in the second game. He evidently decided that playing a somewhat offbeat line was his best chance. By move 6 he was only one move away from castling, so it must have seemed like his king was in no great danger.

perfidious: As <keypusher> astutely posted of the difficulties in playing for a win with Black when facing Carlsen:

<....Carlsen is a really good player. When he has White, all he wants is something, anything that lets him play. You're not going to prevent him from getting that kind of position. You're going to have to try to hold, as Anand did in Game 4. But it's never going to be easy or pleasant, and there are no magic opening solutions available to you.>
