An Englishman: Good Evening: Pity the tournament didn't take place in the year 500. Anyone else remember The Proclaimers?

As for the game, Black's first 3 moves have not enjoyed a good reputation since Nimzowitsch started playing this line in the 1920s. He probably would have loved White's Rook maneuvers on moves 21 and 22.

piltdown man: Actually, I thought of the Pretenders and their Christmas song.
Dec-27-23  goodevans: I like the pun. I also like the song. When you hear Christmas songs year after year they can become stale but '2000 Miles' is one of the few that always sounds fresh to me.

I quite enjoyed the game too. Black's <34...Bxg6> looked fine to me, defending both h-pawns in one stroke. I'm sure I'd have done the same but when I saw what happened after <35.Qe6+> it seemed preventing that, the greater danger, would have been a better idea.

That would have been a great save. I missed that when I first played through this.

Here's the position a couple of moves earlier, with White to move:

Miles' <56.Qd7+ Kg6 57.h7> looks like a good plan as it threatens 58.Qe8+ but <57...Kh6> neatly sidesteps that and would have left White very much regretting pushing Black's K towards his own.

The point is that White's Q is now practically hamstrung. Almost any attempt to push home the a-pawn, e.g. 58.Qb7??, will be met with 58...Kg5 and White gets mated. An exception is 38.Qa4 but after 58...Rh2+ 59.Kg4 g2 Black will also promote.

Dec-27-23  thegoodanarchist: Miles had an Acs to grind...

  al wazir: Why did black play 38...Qd7 ? 38...Qb7 defends the ♗ and after 39. Qxg6 h4 40. Qg8+ Kd7 41. Qh7 Kd8, black is up a ♗+♙. The best white can hope for is a perpetual.

38...Qb7 runs into 39.Rg7 Kd8 40.Rg8+ Kc7 41.Qxe7+ Kb6 42.Rxg6+ Kb5 43.Qe6 with quick mate.

Yes, that does the job, and rather quickly. The game lasted a lot longer after 28...Qd7. Thanks.
