offramp: Ding Liren lost a bit earlier. This game is in progress but I think Nepo might win here.

  Sally Simpson: Hi Off Ramp,

Going by the last diagram. He has the better pawns structure, an active King, the d-file. Yes he winning. But it is Nepo and all it takes is one rushed move. But he should win this.

offramp: Yes, User: Sally Simpson the material is level but Nepo has <visually> a big plus.

BTW, on Wednesday Nepo plays Ding Liren. I think Nepo will try really hard to win that game.

I think that is a reasonable way of playing counterplay.

Jan-21-24  technical draw: I see a win for Nepomniachachacha so get ready for the dancing rook.

White is now 2 pawns up. That's a bit hefty.

perfidious: The extra, doubled pawn is likely not worth much on its own, but that spare button on the kingside will come in useful.

yea but he lined up the rook for a discovery which can be useful with Ng5+ and grab the H pawn. So if black plays Nxc4 Kd4 and then another knight move like ..Nd6 or ..Na3 or something.. white traded off the double c for an H pawn, an improvement.

An Englishman: Good Morning: Have followed this game on and off, and feeling a bit surprised that Black has managed to hang on this long. White should win, of course, but superficially this looks like a pretty good defensive effort.

perfidious: How does the black knight escape the jaws of death after snatching its ill-gotten booty?

PawnSac: will the knight get trapped?

PawnSac: I didn't like Na3 for that reason. Nd6 seemed a little better, but..

PawnSac: and now Kb2? oh.. he played Nf1. so now Ne3 and Kb2? I guess he figures the knight isn't going anywhere, so what's the hurry?
Jan-21-24  goodevans: <PawnSac: and now Kb2?...>

If Kb2 then ...Rd7 and White doesn't win a piece

Jan-21-24  goodevans: ... and if White reroutes his N to e3 then the Black K goes to c5.

Black's N is trapped but is quite safe, at least for now.

I had in mind something like..

54. Kb2 Rd7 55. Kc1 Ra7 56. Re3+ Kf5 57. Rd3 guarding the knight and blocking out the rook. Then Kb2 again. Maybe it doesn't work, i'll have to take a deeper look later.

perfidious: The youngster having his pieces scattered about in this ending, while those of his opponent worked in unison, was not going to go unpunished.
