 | | Williebob: I've said it elsewhere, but I'll gladly rant again here that Carlsen owes nothing to chess or its fans after ten years of carrying water for FIDE. Of course he seems to have done very well for himself financially, but I would not begrudge that result with even half of the activity and commitment to raising the profile of the game as he has shown.
He had to defend the title one year after winning it. He's had to defend it about every two years since. FIDE hasn't required head-to-head match play for anyone else on the WCC path since before the reunification. We still expect a World Champion to be active between title matches; did Magnus ever take a six month break, even leading up to a title defense?
In short, blame FIDE for any concerns or regrets surrounding the title, because the strongest player in history has had enough of the dirty bunglers. |
|
Feb-08-24
 | | Williebob: Apologies for any offense caused; Carlsen is clearly one of the strongest players in history, but we've seen forceful arguments for Lasker and Kasparov as the GOAT elsewhere... and I reckon Karpov should be considered second to none as well. |
|
Feb-08-24
 | | perfidious: The former FIDE system featuring three-year cycles was, in my mind, clearly preferable; the titleholder has seemingly barely finished a gruelling match and has to go through all the preparations again. |
|
Feb-08-24
 | | Atterdag: The two-year cycle is too strenuous for the champion. For a challenger it's a one time effort - for the champion every other year. I am in for the old three-years cycle as suggested by <perfidious>. I fully understand why Carlsen had enough of it, and he could easily have avoided the mess he caused, if only he had announced his resignation a few months after he had beaten Nepomniachtchi. Good posts, <Williebob>! |

 | | Sally Simpson: Hi WillieBob,
I agree with your view on Carlsen resigning the title, just disappointed it happened. He resigning and Karjakin being silly were the circumstances that gave Ding his shot at the title. Without those two's actions he would never have been in the candidates or the final. Ding's good play, a touch of luck and here we are. The two year cycle is great for fans, the media and the FIDE coffers, also a great pay day for the players concerned, even the loser with his candidates winnings and W.C. losers prize ends up with 1 million euros. <Apologies for any offense caused?> don't worry about that. Nobody can be or should be offended if you have a valid opinion. |
|
Feb-10-24 | | 1300patzer: <In short, blame FIDE for any concerns or regrets surrounding the title, because the strongest player in history has had enough of the dirty bunglers.> Isn't this the third time that's happened? |
|
Feb-10-24
 | | plang: I don't see how it is FIDE's fault that Carlsen prefers other forms of chess to classical. |
|
Feb-10-24 | | EvanTheTerrible: Agreed, Plang. One can argue that the format can be improved, but pleasing one individual player should not be their goal. |

<After almost a decade, chess24 will close its doors on January 31.> Now they will <join forces> with Chess.com. I say, it's a pity and a loss. A great uncomplicated site for watching live games. |

"We realize chess24 is still a go-to site for many, especially to watch chess tournaments, but regrettably we will close down the chess24 website and mobile apps on January 31. This decision was not taken lightly, but due to limited resources, significant maintenance costs, and the aging technology of chess24, it was felt better to focus efforts on Chess.com, which has more potential for growth and innovation." You can now find reports from our team at Chess.com/news, and you can keep up with events at Chess.com/events. " (Signed: The Chess.Com advertising office, Oceania.) |

|
Feb-12-24 | | ex0duz: I was wondering what happened to chess bomb. Is it so hard for chess.com to do decent broadcasts with chat option ? From what I've seen their UI is horrible, no chat, not much coverages except big tourneys etc |

Feb-12-24
 | | Sally Simpson: <How would this happen?> There are people who pay a sub here so anyone who pays a sub to a chess site then chess.com are interested and put in place... Plan A:
Flood their database with ridiculous nonsense blitz/bullet/random chess games so that it becomes unmanageable and keeps breaking down. The target being that chess.com cartoon games will eventually outnumber OTB games and we, the sub payers, are subliminally weaned off OTB games and drift towards online games as our only fix. Plan B:
Plant a whole load of lackey toads on the site who praise the addition of these claptrap games and with smirking faces thank C.G. for posting them knowing full well the damage it is doing. (I have no need to point them out - they know who they are - I know who they are.) Plan C:
Any condemnation of Carlsen (he that is holy) must be nipped in the bud and the perpetrator is to be vilified. (if possible find out where they live so they can send the boys round.) Plan E:
Get me to stop using 'their' green pawn logo but that aint gonna happen no matter how times this site asks me to change it. So plan E will fail. (C.G. has not yet asked me to change it but they will. The chess.com tentacles are out there and closing in.) Edit: What have you done with Plan D? Someone has been in and removed plan D: I must have struck a nerve with that one. One of the moderators here is on the chess.com payroll! |

 | | perfidious: <Geoff>, as to your post: On A): A way to segregate all that random nonsense would be welcome; I too would rather have a section for classical games without all that twaddle. B): Like me or loathe me, anyone wants to find a sycophant, they had best look elsewhere. C): Thou shalt not blaspheme.
Hahahahaha!!
D): Twarn't me that done took it out.
E): I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid, and would never ask that you take a different avatar. |

 | | Check It Out: <SS> I touched base with Danny Rensch about your pawn, and he said, "Don't worry about it." His hands were clasped together with the index fingers making a steeple which he propped up under his chin as he said this. He whispered something to a nearby aid, and glared at him because he stood there too long. He believe he said something like, "I'm not paying you to stand around!" I later saw the aid coming out of the legal department, but I'm sure that's a coincidence. |
|
Feb-13-24 | | BxChess: <Please observe our posting guidelines: [...]
8. Do not degrade Chess.com or any of its staff/volunteers.> Shouldn't that be denigrate? Degrade carries the image of slow poisening, or surreptitious (sp?) attack by lasers, or quietly speeding up the ageing process, all of which are a little difficult for a kibitzer. |
|
Feb-13-24
 | | Sally Simpson: Hi Check it Out,
I was going to suggest that everyone here will adopt my green pawn lcon, a 'I'm Spartacus' type of thing and this will also weed out the chess.com toadies. But this system will only allow one specific icon per player. Obviously this rule came from of chess.com in an effort to stamp any form of solidarity. |
|
Feb-13-24
 | | perfidious: <BxChess>, 'denigrate' is indeed better usage than 'degrade'. |
|
Feb-13-24 | | Refused: <Atterdag: From the site of Chess24.com: <After almost a decade, chess24 will close its doors on January 31.> Now they will <join forces> with Chess.com. I say, it's a pity and a loss. A great uncomplicated site for watching live games.> Not that surprising.
chess.com and chess24 are essentially competitors. So them running against each, with the need to maintain both sites made no sense. So it was a matter of time after the takeover before of the sites would shut down. |
