Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-27-24  fisayo123: Nice win
Jun-28-24  ultrausurper: Both players missed the problem with white's 23.Bxe4?, which looks the same as 23.Nxe4! Rxe4 24.Bxe4 Qxe4, transposing to the game. However, in the game variation, instead of 23...Rxe4? black could've played 23...Qxd1! 24.Rxd1 b4! with the threat of either Ba4 or bxa3.

Black still got a slight advantage after 24.Nxe4?! and could've kept it with 26...Qf5! 27.Rg3 Re8. Gukesh said he had originally planned 24.Rd3, but then saw 24...h4! which he didn't like.

As the players got down to less than a minutes on the clock, black missed a chance to save the game on move 40: Bxg2! with the idea of Kxg2 Nxe3+ Qxe3 Qc2+. Black would end up a pawn up in that line, but white doesn't have to take the bishop immediately, and can play Ra8+ first instead, but black still gets enough counterplay for the draw.

Jun-30-24  Cecco: Another tactical resource for black would have been 30. ... Bxb5.
