Check It Out: Why play 55...g4? It loses a pawn and gives white a passer on both sides of the board.

perfidious: <CIO>, in principle the move played looks silly, but the snag here is that the pawn on g5 is fatally weak--an instance of which having pawns on the same colour squares as the bishop, with them being defensible by it, is often less bad, although it goes against the injunction of placing them there.

Against passive play, Vachier could have continued with ideas such as Re7 and a7, intending to exploit the lack of coordination of Black's pieces to break in with Rg7 and pick off the defenceless pawn. The resultant ending will be winning for White because his bishop is more useful than the knight with all the play on one side of the board.

takebackok: Computer says 68...Rg8 was mistake, think Wes realized that after (69. Kf6 Rxg5 loses to 70. a7) However, even after 68...Kb6 white must still be wining, no?!
