I am proud to be the first to kibitz on this page and report that Jim Rousselle is the new (reigning) LA State Champion!

Sep-22-11  Shams: <AJ> Second place, congratulations, that's pretty good. As a non-LA resident, were you even up for the title?

LIFE Master AJ: Actually - I tied for first, (3-way split.); the money was divided evenly! Jim DID win the title on tie-breaks ... as someone who is NOT a resident of LA, I was never eleigible for the title in the first place. (I am not even sure of my tiebreaks, Bob Ballard was going to e-mail me with that, but he never did.)
Sep-22-11  Marmot PFL: Congrats Mr. Rousselle. I am all for encouraging young talent but it's good to see an older guy who can still play the game better. 5 titles, the first one 37 years ago. Maybe I should game the game another shot... My biggest problem was time management. The clock just seems to move faster as I age.
Sep-22-11  Shams: Well, I should learn how to read a crosstable, that's a fair cop.

LIFE Master AJ: BTW, welcome to this site ... its long past due that you have your own page! (All we need now is a bio and a picture!)

Maybe it would seem a little like conceit to you, but I am sure that the rest of the users here would join me in asking you to post a few of your very best games. (Please?)

Count me in on this; I've seen strong players who, same as Jim, were in the 2300 USCF range but lacked a FIDE rating, what with one thing and another, and had kibitzers deride their playing strength.

By all means, Jim, post a game or three if you like!

LIFE Master AJ: From the story (see link, just above).

<<By winning his fifth state championship, Rousselle joins only NM Alfred Carlin (five titles), FM John D. Bick (six titles), and the legendary A.L. McAuley (nine titles) as the only people to ever win five state championships in Louisiana. Rousselle, who previously won the state championship in 1974, 1976, 1977, and 1984, also set records for the most years in between titles (27 years), and most years in between first and last titles (37 years). To put Rousselle’s achievement in perspective, Caveney, who is no spring chicken, having been controversially denied the title in 1992, was born two and a half months after Rousselle won his first state championship.>>

Hurray for guys who might be 50+ ... but can still play!!!!!!!

Sep-24-11  solskytz: I'll drink to that!

(This guy is off ignore. That function is just plain silly)

(just in case you're searching for the origin of this verbal gem, it was famously attributed to myself as early as summer 2082)

Sep-24-11  skytzo985: I talked to James yesterday and he will consider posting some games. If I know James, he will post the most artistic and instructional games - win, lose or draw (although he hasn't lost much in the past decade :)

NM JRousselle: Thanks for all the kind words. Now, if I can just get someone who is less technically challenged than I, we might be able to post a few games...
Sep-24-11  skytzo985: I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve.
Sep-24-11  howlwolf: I left a rather lenghty comment on this game that has been deleted: it congratulated Jim, analyzed a couple of junctures of his game with AJ, referenced a game that Jim and I played 30 years ago when we were both experts, and stated my opinion that he is the most talented homegrown Louisiana player of the last couple of generations. I didn't enter the AJ debate, which I have studiously avoided and which sometimes reminds me of the kids I counsel in junior high, and I didn't say anything negative about anybody. Yet my post has been deleted. This is my last post on this site that will consist of anything but just pure analysis. Congratualtions on your accomplishment, Jim. BIll Phillips aka Howlwolf

I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

Sep-24-11  howlwolf: What was it Gilda Radner's Rosana used to say? Nevermind.
Sep-25-11  solskytz: <OhioC>

once I was in high school in tenth grade, and one of the teachers was really angry at my class. Nobody was prepared on the material and he got no answer for his questions...

he exclaimed "you only go backwards!!!"

Everybody fell silent...

then I said "yeah, right, they told us that already in eleventh..."

NM JRousselle: I don't want to get into a verbal exchange. If you think I don't exist, check the USCF ratings list. If that does not work for you, show up at the La Pro-Am in March 2012.

BTW, for all you guys who keep sending hate mail to AJ, please confine your comments on this site to chess. I find it very annoying to have to parse thru this non chess dialogue to reach real stuff.

NM JRousselle: Compliments of Dr Mario Rodriguez of New Orleans, I am now in possession of the game score of the Rousselle-Phillips mad time scramble game. Be on the lookout for it.
Jul-30-13  Pballa: James, I'll my name to the list of posters who want to see some of your most instructive and memorable games here. The correspondence game against the IM and the must-win last round in the state championship (78?) come to mind. I'll help you upload them, if needed.
