JAIME SUNYE NETO
(born May-02-1957, 68 years old) Brazil

[what is this?]

Jaime Sunye Neto was born in Curitiba, Brazil in 1957. He was awarded the IM title in 1980 and the GM title in 1986. He was Brazilian champion every year, with the exception of 1978, between 1976 and 1983 (when he shared the title with Marcos Paolozzi).

His unexpectedly strong showing at the Rio de Janeiro Interzonal (1979), where he tied for fifth place, marked his appearance on the international scene. He was joint second at Havana 1985, and 1st at Zenica (1986). He tied for first with Herman van Riemsdijk at the South American Zonal at Sao Paulo 1989. From 1978 to 1986, he was a mainstay on the Brazilian Olympiad team.

He was President of the Brazilian Chess Federation from 1988 to 1992 and ran for the presidency of FIDE in 1996, when he lost to the incumbent, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, by 87 votes to 44.

Jul-20-03  Ribeiro: <chessgames.com> His name is Jayme Sunye Neto.

Jayme Sunye Neto (in portuguese, Jayme Sunye, the grandson) was born in Curitiba, Brazil, in 1957. He won seven times the Brazilian Championship and once the South-American Zonal (1989). He was the president of the Brazilian Chess Federation from 88 to 92.

Nowadays, his rating is 2533 (fifth player Brazilian player, according to FIDE).

Jul-21-03  Ribeiro: <chessgames.com> You are right, I think his name is "Jaime", and not "Jayme".

WTHarvey: Here are some puzzles from Jaime's early games: http://www.wtharvey.com/suny.html
Jul-20-05  vonKrolock: The brazilian Championship from 1979, in Fortaleza, was a FIDE Zonal: the champion would have a place in the Rio de Janeiro Interzonal - Jaime was the absolute favorite to win the title and won - and arrived to the Interzonal as only player without even the IM title (he was young, and already witn considerable strenght, but in those days there was not the FM title and even to be a IM the waiting time was longer...) Well, he had already a solid international experience - mainly in World Junior, Student and South- or Pan-American events - but nothing near to a Candidate in-the-paper profile... Well, the Tournament started, with great TV and media coverage: The lights of the brazilian media were over Mecking, two times Interzonal winner... After two rounds, Mecking had to leave the Tournament due to a disease (miastenia gravis): Then all the brazilian's hopes were directed toward Sunyé : And he not disapointed! He started to win Game after Game, demolishing experienced GMs like Portisch, Smejkal or Vaganian with the black pieces, etc - and became a national hero: the main eight-night o'clock news from Globo TV presented daily sensational reportages, the greatest daily newspaper showed the moves of the played or adjourned Games in full-page matters...

Jul-20-05  Marco65: <WTHarvey> The first puzzle on your page must be wrong. "Nf6 if Kh8 Qg6" what is that? The king is already in h8, and I don't see how Nf6 wins
Jul-20-05  Knight13: Player of the day! Cool.

And I would like to thank <WTHarvey> for providing some good puzzles for this player.

WTHarvey: <Marco65> Thanks for the heads up. King's on g8 & Nf6+ is the key. I gave you credit on the page. :-) <Knight13> Thx!
Jul-26-05  Marco65: <WTHarvey> No need to credit me, but thanks anyway. Now I see how the solution works, beautiful!
Nov-15-05  Shostakovich: I have a question about Sunye Neto's qualification to the 1979 interzonal. He did not qualify through the regular Tramandai zonal. Trois, Bronstein & van Riemsdyk did. Did Neto play in the zonal? Was another interzonal spot added later due to Brazil being the host country? Was this the 1979 championship as vonKrolock mentions above?
Jul-22-06  arbivara: I'm not 100% sure abaout that, but I supose Sunye's place was added due to Brazil being the host country. That wouldn't, howerver, make the 1979 Brazilian Championship a Zonal, as vonKrolock stated. BTW, Sunye's victory in 1989 Zonal was shared with Van Riemsdijk
Jul-23-06  vonKrolock: While going to Fortaleza in 1979, players were aware that they would play a Swiss with a sure spot in the forecoming Interzonal later that Year in 1979, so the Brazilian Championship that Year was a "de fato" Zonal, ok?
Jul-23-06  arbivara: I forgot to mention that Sunye's bio is incomplete: he also won Brazilian Championship in 1983 (together with Marcos Paolozzi Servulo da Cunha). He's the record holder together with Souza Mendes, seven titles each.
Jul-23-06  arbivara: Anycase, I still wouldn't call that tournament a Zonal, but a Interzonal qualifier, since obviously no other Zone countries were present.
May-02-08  brankat: Happy Birthday GM Neto!

May-02-09  wordfunph: His victories over Larry Evans, Miguel Quinteros, and Weinstein only show that he's once an above-par Grandmaster.

May you have many more brilliant games to come. Happy Birthday Brazilian GM Jaime Sunye Neto..

Oct-27-09  Raginmund: Ótimo.
Sempre gosto de ver sites internacionais lembrando de brasileiros. Longa vida de vitórias ao mestre.
.
Oct-27-09  vonKrolock: From the "Gazeta do Povo" (Curitiba), earlier this year <<<"Chess Player becomes chairman of the Engineers Institute of Paraná State"> "O engenheiro Jaime Sunye Neto – um dos maiores e mais premiados enxadristas brasileiros – assume amanhã a presidência do Instituto de Engenharia do Paraná, para um mandato de dois anos. O tempo parece curto para os vários projetos do novo dirigente: banco de microcrédito para financiar construções populares; bolsa de materiais de construção para pessoas de baixa renda, em parceria com a Fiep; ampliação do curso pré-vestibular gratuito para engenharia, em convênio com o Crea; reutilização das águas da chuva em escolas públicas e outras ações de responsabilidade social.">>
Oct-27-09  vonKrolock: Hey, not even the "People's Gazette" spells good Catalan <Sunyé>
Oct-27-09  shamijacobus: Hi.
karlos
Oct-28-09  WhiteRook48: wasn't he player of the day yesterday?
Dec-11-10  wordfunph: Jaime also won the 2nd Annual Americas Junior Championship which was held in Buenos Aires 1975 with 8/9.
May-02-11  IRONCASTLEVINAY: Happy Birthday
