NICK DE FIRMIAN
(born Jul-26-1957, 67 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

Three-time U.S. chess champion, winning in 1987 (with Joel Benjamin), 1995, and 1998. He also tied for first in 2002, but Larry Christiansen won the playoff. He is also a chess writer, most famous for his work in writing the 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of the important chess opening treatise Modern Chess Openings.

He has represented the United States at several Interzonals and played on the United States Olympiad teams of 1980, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1996, 1998, and 2000. De Firmian earned the International Master title in 1979 and the GM title in 1985. Beginning in the 1990s, he lived for many years in Denmark. He currently resides in California.

He won the 1983 Canadian Open Chess Championship. In 1986, he won the World Open and the first prize of $21,000, at that time a record for a Swiss system tournament. De Firmian was a founding member of Prochess, a grandmaster advocacy group dedicated to promoting chess in the United States. He has a degree in physics from the University of California, Berkeley.

De Firmian is a noted expert on chess openings and in 1990 he revised Modern Chess Openings, 13th edition (MCO-13). In 1999 he wrote the 14th edition of Modern Chess Openings (MCO-14), which, along with Nunn's Chess Openings (NCO), is considered an outstanding single volume opening reference in English. He also helped prepare the chess opening book for the IBM Deep Blue team for its successful 1997 match with Garry Kasparov.

Apr-04-04  ruylopez900: This is the lead author for Modern Chess Openings and Openings for Beginners. Does anyone know if he has his Grandmaste title?
Apr-04-04  Jim Bartle: Definitely a GM for many years. According to this page, his ELO has reached 2590. I'd think there are few players rated that high who aren't GMs. (??)
Apr-05-04  ruylopez900: I know that your rating has to be at least 2500 to be a GM, so he's close enough that I think that he could have held the rating without getting the norms. But if he's held it for a while (no way to find out here) then he definitely should have the GM title.
Apr-05-04  MoonlitKnight: GM Nick E. De Firmian (2542) from the USA.
Apr-05-04  electricknight: De Firmian was an IM in 1979 he was a Grandmaster in 1985....United States Champion 1987,1998,1995.
Jul-06-04  Helloween: A good author and 1.e4 theoretician, although his work in MCO is somewhat overshadowed by the superior NCO.

jaime gallegos: if I´m not wrong currently you need 2600 to be a GM
se http://www.ctv.es/USERS/cavalle/esc...
Jul-06-04  Eatman: <Jaime> You only need to reach 2500 in the first year after you get your GM norms. After that you can be as low as can be (as evidenced by older GMs dropping below 2400) All that said, De Frimian is a nice guy
and a real GM.
Jul-06-04  PinkPanther: So wait, if you don't reach 2500 in the year following the completion of your norms do your norms get taken away or do they just "hold" your title until you reach 2500?
Jul-06-04  square dance: <helloween> could you explain why nco is considered superior to mco?
Jul-06-04  Eatman: <PinkPanther> yes if you can't reach the rating 2500 you will lose the norms and you will have to do it again. Generally such cases are rare. I do know a few people who didn't reach 2400 rating required for IM, and lost their IM norms.
Jul-06-04  Helloween: <square dance> NCO contains much, much more theory and many more important game references. There are many more lines, and the moves are very correct(as opposed to a few inferior moves being given prerogative in MCO). The text is also a lot cleaner and contains less move errors and grammatical errors. The team of experts behind NCO clearly put in much more work and gave us an amazing effort.
Jul-06-04  square dance: <helloween> thank you.
Jul-06-04  Larsker: Nick DeFirmian is married to a Danish woman and living in Denmark. He often participates in Scandinavian tournaments.

Born 26th July 1957 in Fresno
And as noted above IM in 1979 and GM in 1985.
Feb-07-05  JohnBoy: There is a DeFirmian-Christiansen (not sure who had white) game from about 1977, played at the American Open in Santa Monica which had an amusing end. Dif had seriously outplayed LC and was several pawns up in a Q+P ending when he fell into the only remaining cheapo LC had. Ended up allowing LC to trade Qs and get an unstoppable passed pawn. I watched it and there was a low-level gasp across the room when Dif made his error. Anyone have access to this game?
Apr-02-05  ruylopez900: Does anyone know when/if MCO 15th edition is going to be published?
Apr-02-05  chess man: Modern Chess Openings is a great book on chess openings even though it's not as comprhensive as some of the other books that you can get on openings.
May-02-05  chess man: Nick De Firmian, the world's leading expert on chess openings "taught" the supercomputer Deep Blue the opening moves it used to defeat World Champion Garry Kasparov in 1997, Mr. De Firmian is an International Grandmaster and a three-time United States Chess Champion.

--MCO (Modern Chess Openings 14th ed.)

Jul-15-05  calman543: What is NCO?
Jul-15-05  nikolaas: Nunn's Chess Openings.
Aug-16-05  chess man: When I read a chess author on an opening book like MCO (Modern Chess Openings) I find it interesting to see what the author plays himself.
Oct-18-05  chess man: A few days ago I just purchased this great chess book. Before I kept borrowing it. Now, I can use it anytime!
