Oct-10-07  Riverbeast: This is my homey Eli. He's a bad mamma jamma, these games don't do him justice.
Jul-15-08  Riverbeast: He's also a poker genius, watch for him at the WSOP final table live in November!
Nov-03-08  johnsbrother: Good luck in a few days Ylon at the World Series of Poker! For those of you not aware, he currently has the 5th biggest chip stack. If he finishes in 5th, he takes home a cool $3 million. First place is over $9 million.
Nov-03-08  Shams: I feel torn rooting for chess playing poker players. chess just can't compete with that amount of dough.

On the other hand, since he's an F.O.B. (Friend Of Beast) I *suppose* I can marshal some love for the guy.

Riverbeast, have you talked to him about his training over the last five months? He must be doing final table simulations like a madman.

Nov-03-08  Strongest Force: Good luck Ylon! I hope you win the nine million! Be smart and stash it away from the IRS! :) hopefully i will play chess with you on the streets of nyc like in the old days... before the terrorist get us.
Nov-04-08  Riverbeast: <Shams> <Strongest Force> I'm going out to Vegas to watch the November Nine live...Some other friends of ours are coming out also ....It should be a good time

Watch on ESPN.... If you see an idiot in the cheering section holding up a chesspiece - a black king, specifically - that would be me....

(I've decided that's going to be a good luck charm....Ylon Schwartz' name means "the black tree"...So I told him he's going to be "the black king")

Nov-04-08  Shams: from the WSOP website-- note last sentence:

<Ylon Schwartz, nicknamed "Eman," is a 38-year-old from Brooklyn, New York. Growing up, one of his favorite athletes was Reggie Jackson. He attended the Borough of Manhattan Community College and is a former professional chess player, who played games for money in New York City's public parks. He discovered he could make a far better living playing poker, and has been doing so the last several years. He has earned 30 live tournament cashes in the last decade, totaling $255,851. Of those profitable endeavors, Schwartz has yet to place better than 3rd in any live poker tournament. This is his 12th time to cash at the WSOP (more than any other finalist); and his best previous finish was 15th place in the $2,000 buy-in Limit Hold’em event this year. <Part of his plan with his prize money is to help a few of his best friends.> >

hmm, I bet you're going, <Riverbeast>! get one of those ridiculously large black kings, like for playing in the park.

seriously, that should be a ton of fun. however, please don't spoil it for us-- it doesn't air on tv until the 11th.

Nov-05-08  Strongest Force: <RiverBeast> Good luck with your trip and send "E" my best regards.
Nov-05-08  Riverbeast: <Shams> <Strongest Force> I'm not expecting anything from Ylon ...He's been one of my best friends since we were 13 years old....I just want to cheer him on and hope he wins that bracelet!

I can share another funny story about Ylon ("the black tree")....One year he played in the New York City African American chess championship tournament!

He insisted he should be allowed to play, since he's a "Schwartz" at heart...And the organizers agreed...Since everyone who knows him knows that he's white on the outside, but black on the inside....

He finished second (to Maurice Ashley)and was deeply disappointed...He desperately wanted the title of New York City African American Chess Champion!

So I told 'white chocolate' that he's going to be the African American poker champion!

Nov-05-08  Strongest Force: Thx for that great story, <RiverBeast>. I never heard that story but i did hear that he won various blitz-tournaments around the city. At 14, he just came up to me, introduced himself and invited me to the chess tables on 108th and RSD. He's only one of 3 that i ever picked-up during or after school hours; the other 2 were Max Dlugy and Josh Waitzkin.
Nov-05-08  Riverbeast: <Strongest Force> Yeah, he used to play up at Riverside Drive with Clayton, Carlton, that whole crew....Before he came down to Washington Square Park (that's where we met...Both of us misspent our youths there, as you probably remember!)

He and I always had a rivalry going since we were kids...When we first met I was a better blitz player, but now I would definitely say he's better....

Nov-05-08  Riverbeast: If you guys want a good laugh, check out Ylon's website shipthecheese.com

He has 'magic shirts' with the phrase (adapted from The Ring of Power in 'Lord of the Rings'):

"One Shirt to Rule Them All...One Shirt to Find Them...One Shirt To Bring them All...And At the Table Grind Them"

He told me he's going to give me one...I'm going to wear it at my next chess tournament! :-)

Nov-05-08  Shams: <I'm not expecting anything from Ylon ...He's been one of my best friends since we were 13 years old....I just want to cheer him on and hope he wins that bracelet!>

of course, of course. honestly though, do you think he's playing all-out to win? Last place is "only" 900k...I'd want to at least wait until a few players got bounced before I risked everything. I do understand that that's a loser's attitude, though.

Nov-05-08  Riverbeast: <Shams> I think he's keeping his expectations low in order to keep a cool head...But he's a good player and he has a decent chip count, so anything can happen.

He gave me his scouting report on other players on the field....I won't mention names, but several of the players he respects...About one player though, Ylon said "He thinks he's a genius...But he's an amateur"

Nov-05-08  Strongest Force: I didn't even know Ylon played poker until recently. However, <RiverBeast>, did you know that E is/was a world-class cook? He once made some of the best Chinese food i have ever eaten. He enjoyed life like few people i have ever known. He loved dancing, he played the drums, had a open mind about music... i was able to get him to love certain Jazz greats ... and i also taught him how to make the world's best hamburger. The all-night blitz-chess that we had with his crew almost had the neighbors calling the police! :)
Nov-05-08  Tessie Tura: There was a nice interview in the Times the other day. I don’t see that anyone has posted it elsewhere, but excuse me if this is redundant:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/03/n...

<Mr. Schwartz, a highly ranked chess master who has played in many tournaments, said that some of the skills needed to succeed at chess are also useful in poker. “Chess players are trained to have excellent memories,” he said. “In poker, you need to remember betting patterns.” And strategic skill is essential in poker as well as chess. For instance, keeping the other poker players from folding when you have a good hand depends on how much you bet early on.>

Nov-05-08  Illogic: I met Ylon (briefly) at a Foxwoods tournament a few years back. He ended up making the final table. I didn't get his name or anything but he had a rather unique look ;) so I recognized him right away seeing him on the ESPN coverage this year. Anyway he was a cool guy, so I'm pulling for him!

Turns out he's a fine chess player too, even more reason to root for him.

Nov-06-08  Riverbeast: <but he had a rather unique look >

You mean his big frizzy Jew-fro, and his beret?

Yes, he is a great guy...I'm happy for his success because I know he's paid his dues...In fact, he went flat broke right before entered the World Series, and told me if he didn't win any money he was in danger of getting evicted from his apartment!

Nov-11-08  Shams: ESPN is showing the final table tonight, 9 p.m. EST. Don't click around the web if you don't want spoilers.

also, ESPN is usually streamed online at stoogetv.com.

Nov-12-08  whiskeyrebel: Wow, he won a nice pile..congrats! I hope he gets to keep at least half of it.

matey: Schwartz blundered badly by inexplicably going all in on the river for 15 million with just an Ace high hand. His opponent, the eventual winnner Eastgate, had made a full house. Still, Schwartz made almost 4 million for finishing fourth.
Nov-12-08  Shams: <matey> yeah, I didn't like the bluff either but if he wins it he's a genius. such is poker. since they only replay a small fraction of the hands, it's hard for us to judge their play. earlier he made a great laydown on the river with a king-high flush, correctly reading his opponent had the ace. (of course, I thought he should have dumped the hand on the turn, but what do I know.)

Nov-12-08  johnsbrother: <Shams> That was a pretty sick laydown with that king-high flush...nice read. Big chunk of cheese for the guy!
Nov-12-08  Shams: are you really John's brother??? do you think you could get me John's autograph?
Nov-13-08  Riverbeast: <That was a pretty sick laydown with that king-high flush...nice read. Big chunk of cheese for the guy!>

Yes, of all the televised plays I thought that one was the best!

Ylon thought he should have gotten the "planters good instinct moment" for that.

Instead they gave it to Demidov, for folding kings up to Eastgate's trips...A nice read, but not nearly as difficult as Ylon's...since two of Eastgate's trips were showing on the table.

It was Eastgate's tournament though...He not only made all the right moves, but he got all the cards in the big hands....The 6 he got to eliminate Montgomery was truly disgusting, because it was the only 6 left in the deck! (Philips said he had the other six)
