Aaron, Manuel (1935- )
India’s first International Master (IM). He was born in Toungoo, Burma on December 30, 1935 and became an International Master in 1961. In 1962 he took last place out of 23 players in the Stockholm Interzonal. He became an International Arbiter in 1986. His highest FIDE rating was 2420. He has won the state of Tamil Nadu (Madras) 10 times and the India National Championship 9 times. These records still stand. He is the director of the Aaron Chess Academy, India’s first chess academy and the founder and editor of Chess Mate magazine. In 1966 he became also an International chess arbiter.

Nov-26-04 | | kostich in time: Aaron beat Euwe at the Olympiad in Liepzig in 1960..it isnt in this database. |
|
Nov-26-04 | | nikolaas: Euwe was extremely out of shape by then. In fact, he was the first ever GM to score less than 50% at the olimpiads with only
+3 =7 -6. |

Jun-14-05 | | aw1988: Tell me something. How do posts like asianboy's end up on pages like these? This makes absolutely no relevance to the player, and is stupidity. |

Manuel Aaron pioneered the game of chess as a youngster and have played a pivotal role ever since in placing India, as an emerging force in world chess forum. He was the first Indian to earn the title of International Master. While Aaron made a significant contribution to Indian chess in his career as a competitive player, his efforts to increase chess awareness and make the game popular, is dominant till date. He formed many chess groups and convinced players to learn the openings and other formal chess literature, thus helping making the international variety popular in India. First chess player to be honored with the Arjuna Award (India's highest sports award). (source: http://www.iloveindia.com/sports/ch...) |

Sep-12-09 | | jerseybob: Aaron finished dead last in the 1962 Interzonal, but check out the two games he did win, against Uhlmann and Portisch (against whom he had a 2-0 lifetime record). They're both very good games, as black in a K.I.D. both times. |

Dec-30-09 | | waustad: Wasn't Mir Sultan Khan a chess master in the modern tradition? He started out playing an Indian variety of the game, but became quite proficient at the Western version. |
|
Dec-30-09 | | Petrosianic: Not sure what "In the tradition" means. I don't think FIDE ever gave him the GM title, making Aaron the first titled Indian player, though I could be wrong about that. From what I hear, Aaron is still around, and a much respected chess teacher and coach in India. |
|
Dec-30-09 | | Raisin Death Ray: I prefer his brother Hank! |
|
Oct-10-12 | | Conrad93: Mir Sultan Khan played chess through natural ability. He had no theoretical knowledge. This was the first strong player to apply chess knowledge into his games and get a title. |
