ALEXANDER MOTYLEV (born Jun-17-1979, 46 years old) Russia (federation/nationality Romania) PRONUNCIATION: [what is this?] Born in Yekaterinburg (his father is Anatoly Motyliov), Motylev learned to play chess when he was 4 and became a Candidate Master by the time he was 11. He became a GM in 2000. Championships <Youth> He has won the Russian under 16 and under 18 championships. <National> Motylev won the 2001 Russian Championship. Placed 3rd in the Russian Championship Higher League (2013), thereby qualifying for the Russian Championship Superfinal (2013). He was second on tiebreak behind Vladislav Artemiev at the Russian Higher League Championship 2015, this placement earning him qualification to the Russian Superfinal to be held in August 2015. <Continental and World Cup> He scored 7.5/11 at the European Championship (2011), placing 26th on tiebreak and qualifying for the World Cup (2011), where he unexpectedly lost in the first round to Ukrainian GM Yuri Drozdovskij, succumbing to the Armageddon blitz tiebreaker after drawing the classical games and the rapid and blitz game tiebreakers. Motylev won the European Championship (2014), a full point ahead of his rivals with 9/11 (+7 -0 =4), thereby qualifying for the World Cup (2015) where he defeated Boris Grachev in the first round only to fall to Anish Giri in the second, thereby bowing out of the Cup tournament. At the European Rapid Championship (2021) he finished in a three way tie for first with Paulius Pultinevicius and Alexander Motylev. Standard Tournaments He was =1st (5th on tiebreak) at the 3rd Dubai Open in 2001 and won the Corsican Open at Bastia in 2003. In 2005, he was equal first with Emil Sutovsky (who won on countback) at the Aeroflot Open (2005), second at the 2nd Sanjin Hotel Cup (behind Pentala Harikrishna). In 2006, he and Magnus Carlsen jointly won the Corus Group B (2006). He placed outright 2nd at the category 18 Karpov Poikovsky (2013). Motylev participated in the Gashimov Memorial (Group B) (2014), the 2nd tier of a tournament inaugurated to commemorate the late Azeri grandmaster. He came outright second with 5.5/9 behind Pavel Eljanov in the category XVII 10-player round robin event. Team Events In October he was first reserve for his team Malachite in the European Club Cup (2013), scoring 4/5 and helping his team to win silver.
