Jan-10-19  Dr Winston OBoogie: Great interview with Roger Federer coming this week on CNN. I've seen a few clips and he says if he could play any player in any tournament in history it would have been Bjorg at Wimbledon in a 5 set thriller which he wins at set point with a forehand - *pause* :) Bjorg calls him the GOAT and even though my <non tennis expert ass> agrees Federer is the 🐐 I still prefer Sampras for some reason. I don't even know why, from what i recall he used to win games with aces, i remember Becker, McEnroe and even Jimmy Connors (<he> was exciting for a tennis player!) yet Sampras and Davenport once helped win me a few quid back in 01-02ish so I'm eternally grateful, lol :)

When I was a kid I was way above average at every sport we played... Apart from tennis! Tennis players are the very definition of athletes. Up there with boxers but not exactly <that> fit.

Mar-31-19  Keyser Soze: Federer is grabbing another Master 1000 it seems. Isner without his serve (bad today) he's got no chance. Good stuff.

HeMateMe: I think Serena lost weight. She looks a little slimmer at Roland Garros, this year. That big body crammed into the tinker bell pixie costume was painful to look at. I hope she bagged that one for good.

HeMateMe: damn, Rafa has 11 French titles! That's OBSCENE! he's in the third round safely.
May-31-19  Bobby Fiske: Tennis sensation: Today, Federer will meet young Casper Ruud in Round 3 of the French Open. A Norwegian winning a Grand Slam tournament, is as unlikely as claiming a Norwegian could become chess world champion.
Jun-03-19  Keyser Soze: Whatta game today Potro -Khachanov.
Watch out for this Russian. Still young and very tough. All the best players are now on QF. Federer is doomed. Even if he pass through Wawrinka I think he will not going to survive against Nadal on semis.

On the other side. Great games. Zverev and Djoko and Khachanov and Thiem.

Djoko and Thiem will.be awesome..only those two can stop Nadal Imo

HeMateMe: Fed must be feeling younger. I though he gave up clay tennis to save his knees for Wimbledon?
Jun-03-19  Keyser Soze: If he goes to semis is a feat already IMO. Clay demands too much physical effort for a guy with this age.

saffuna: <I though he gave up clay tennis to save his knees for Wimbledon?>

Playing on clay is easier on the knees than playing in hard coyrts, because players slide as they stop.

But points are long, matches are often long, and it takes a toll.

HeMateMe: that's what I meant, longer rallies. Also, Rolland Garros has Spaniards who only play on clay, specialists. I think that makes it harder to win there.

saffuna: Yes, there are "clay specialists," players better on clay.

But there are no top 100 players who play only on clay.

Jun-04-19  Keyser Soze: incredible tough game now Wawrinka-Fed. Totally unpredictable. 3rd set can go any way..

chancho: 12th French Open trophy, 18 total grand slam wins, trailing the Fed by only 2.

And still playing at a very high level at 33 years of age.

Rafa is <Incredible.>

HeMateMe: a fifteen year old who is apparently phenomenally talented knocked off 39 year old Venus Williams in the first round at Wimbly this year. Venus has won it five times, although she isn't the same player anymore. Still, I think she was in the semis two years ago, still very tough on grass. McEnroe said the fifteen year old is so good, he predicts she'll be world no. 1 at age 20.

HeMateMe: COCO time! The 15 year old makes it to the Wimbly quarterfinals! Wow, reminds me of watching 16 year old Boris Becker win the whole thing, 35 years ago.

saffuna: <The 15 year old makes it to the Wimbly quarterfinals! Wow.>

She's in the fourth round. Needs to beat Simona Halep to reach the quarterfinals. I very much doubt she can beat Halep, but youneverknow. Halep is no model of consistency.

saffuna: Commentators Cliff Drysdale and Mary Joe Fernandez were discussing Cori Gauff after her loss today to Simona Halep.

I know broadcasters often want to avoid discussing their personal experience, but neither Drysdale nor Fernandez herself even mentioned that Fernandez had reached the French Open quarterfinals at 15, same age as Gauff. They didn't think that was relevant?

Maybe they had discussed it earlier, I don't know. But it was a glaring omission.

HeMateMe: that's right Fernandez was playing when they let 14 year old girls turn pro. She would have had an interesting perspective. Graff was actually turned out at age 13 by her father. If I recall, Fernandez was tall at an early age, big hitter.

Coco fairy tale ended today, against Simona Helep, much more experienced and higher rated. These things don't always work out, though. A few years back there was a young woman, I think the niece of Julius Erving, some sort of basketball connection, who made the semis at the US Open. Great things were predicted but then she just disappeared.

HeMateMe: Serena is in the semis, but she's only seeded 11th? She's lost some of that baby weight, seems to be about the same weight as last year. Still 15 pounds heavy, IMO, but this how she'll roll

An American in the semis! S. Querry plays Federer, I think. Hey, Fed is getting older, maybe we can place a man in the final. You never know...

Superbiosity in motion.

He has to beat Nadal in the quarterfinals first.

Erving's daughter Alexandra Stevenson made the Wimbledon semifinals in 1999 at age 18, then only won five more matches in the majors.

She hasn't made it past the second round in any major before or after that Wimbledon (and "before" she played only one major). This is why I always said you cannot judge a player (in any sport) by one event, no matter the importance of the event.

But her highest ranking she reached much later, interestingly (number 18 in 2002). Shows that you don't need majors to be among the top...

alexmagnus: Interestingly, on the way to that semifinal Stevenson defeated only one seeded player (Halard-Decugis in the third round, who was seeded #11). So luck of draw /knockouts played a role too.

HeMateMe: that business of letting tranny men compete as women in prep sports is really strange. They have women's wrestling in high school now. In Texas there's a kid who 'identifies' as a woman, who joined the ladies wrestling team. This is a genetic boy, still has his weanie, but for some reason wants to compete as a girl. so, they let it go forward. The boy/girl won the state championship in his weight class and he was booed off the mat after winning the final match.

Can't say I'm surprised. He had no business competing in the ladies division, completely unfair to the other contestants, insulting really.

alexmagnus: Just abolish gender separation in sports altogether.

It would harm women you say? Short term, sure. Long term, it would actually benefit them. As top women will see the room to improve (think Serena Williams at her peak. There was no motivation for her to improve even further than she was, too dominant she was...)
