saffuna: I have no problem with that post being re-posted, and don't understand why it was deleted.

It's still idiotic, though.

Feb-03-23  optimal play: <saffuna: I have no problem with that post being re-posted, and don't understand why it was deleted. It's still idiotic, though.>

So it wasn't you who complained?

Obviously the complainer is a fanatical Serena Williams supporter, but I would think that person might provide a counter argument rather than just complain.

Actually I'm more interested in who the moderator was who deleted it. He obviously needs a bit more training in correctly applying the posting guidelines (or maybe he's also a fanatical Serena Williams supporter?)

Anyway, I didn't think it was you who complained, and of course you're perfectly entitled to your opinion that it is idiotic.

I won't be complaining about that.

HeMateMe: don't the CG employees just regularly cruise these pages and drop stuff that has serious cursing, racist things, et. al.?

Someone at CG probably thought your moronic comments about serena Williams bordered on racism.

It's been demonstrated to you <optimal aussie> that the world's best players often didn't make the trip down under to Australia.

1. Too long a journey.

2. expensive

3. Shiddy stadium facilities/courts

4. Very near Christmas/family time

only a complete idiot would think that Margret Court wins one Australian Open after the other (ten?) if she has to face Billie Jean King and Chris Evert in the semi/finals. Only an idiot.

BTW, how come you never comment on other players who battled weight problems, such as Lindsay Davenport, Monica Seles, Navratilova and Brenda Schultz? You don't have a problem with white people who are overweight?

saffuna: Uh..<hmm>, Margaret Court won 11 of the 16 majors she played between 1969 and 1973. She was better than King and Evert during this period. Evert later defeated Court regularly when Court was older and had had two children.

As far as Serena being an "old hippo" is concerned, Court basically retired at age 32. Serena won eight majors after turning 32, and was still reaching finals at age 38. An unfair comparison.

Great as she was, Court was not fast. The "old hippo" still covered the court better than Court ever did.

perfidious: <keypusher: <alex: All those age related discussions... I've always said there is a second peak around 35 and sportspeople who retire due to the slump around 30 are missing out on a lot of successes five years later. More and more sports and players seem to confirm my theory.>

I'm fairly familiar with American baseball and football, that's about it. I'm not aware of any evidence for the theory in either sport.>

While there are exceptions--same as Korchnoi reaching his zenith in top-class chess, aged 45-47 rather than ten years earlier--these prove the rule.

One suspects American teams would not be keen to put this theory to the test in the following fashion:

<Management: Bubba, you've had the radish; you're a great guy in the clubhouse and all, but we can't carry you at $4 million next year when you aren't hitting your weight. We'll buy you out for 800k.

Bubba, aged 30: B-b-but if you gimme another shot, I know I'll get back, four years on....>

Feb-03-23  optimal play: <HeMateMe: don't the CG employees just regularly cruise these pages and drop stuff that has serious cursing, racist things, et. al.? Someone at CG probably thought your moronic comments about serena Williams bordered on racism.>

The comment was about five months old so I doubt it was picked up by any "cruising" moderators. And there is obviously nothing racist in my post.

<It's been demonstrated to you <optimal aussie> that the world's best players often didn't make the trip down under to Australia. 1. Too long a journey. 2. expensive 3. You just said that comments which have cursing and racism should be deleted (I agree), and then you immediately include cursing and racism in your post!?

Calling another poster an idiot is a form of cursing, and playing the race card is racism.

So you have just condemned yourself on both counts in your very same post.

Now, as for your attempt to minimise Margaret Smith-Court's achievements, I will simply refer you to my previous posts on this forum.

Please go back and read them to educate yourself on the matter.

The lad's name is 'Federer' so no mention of chess (Optimal Play came close with 'Hippo' when I started thinking about Tal.) so you lot go on about a player in a bat and ball game (and he's from from Switzerland...The Third Man speech needs updating adding tennis to 'Cuckoo Clocks.').

Here is the same lad v Chrsitain Palmer now you lot can swing it onto golf. Or go here E Palmer )

HeMateMe: well, Madison Keyes and Coco Gauf making deep runs at the US Open at Flushing Queens.

John McEnroe used to bitch "I GREW UP ten minutes from here but HE (Jimmy Connors) gets more applause from the fans!!"

Well, that's true. Connors brilliantly played up his adopted persona as the underdog, lunch pail guy against the elite, Long Island rich kid John McEnore. No one worked a crowd better than Jimmy Connors. He should have gone into politics.

Connors: [at age 39, entering pro tournaments unseeded] "I've waited twenty years to be a dangerous floater."

USA has a couple of guys in the semis at Flushing this year, a title? You never know...last time a born American won the US Open was Andy Roddick, twenty years ago. He then retired to appear on celebrity cooking shows. I'm not real impressed with the state of American tennis but I try to stay upbeat.

perfidious: Referee suspended ten years, fined for match fixing:

<.....The ITIA decision read: “The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) today confirms that Slovenian tennis official Marko Ducman has been suspended from the sport for 10 years and six months after admitting to breaches of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP).

“Ducman, an international-level official, admitted to four breaches of the TACP, including wagering on tennis matches and manipulating data from matches in which they were an official to facilitate betting.

“Ducman, a bronze-badge official who has officiated at ITF, ATP and WTA tournaments, co-operated fully with the ITIA investigation and accepted an agreed sanction, waiving their right to a hearing before an independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer. Ducman has also been fined $75,000, with $56,250 suspended.”>

saffuna: Match fixing is a big problem in lower-level tennis tournaments. But typically the players, not the umpires.

perfidious: Do not recall the players, but my memory is of masses of action being booked on one particular game in a low-level ladies' match, which, not surprisingly roused suspicions.

saffuna: There are so many tournaments around the world, so many matches, that it seems possible to get a player to throw a set or a particular game. Not even an entire match.

Not much chance of gamblers buying players in major tournaments. The prize money is so great, gamblers could not offer enough to interest players.

HeMateMe: In his book <The Outsider> Jimmy Connors all but admits he hustled a big bet in Vegas. in a dopey challenge of the sexes match with Martina Navratilova he threw a couple of first set early games, evening up the odds, the payout for a Connors win.

At that point a Connors agent in the stands put up a $ one million bet on Connors to win. His play immediately improved and there was no doubt he would win, which he did.

saffuna: I think Connors vs. Navratilova qualified as an exhibition. Players often play less than their best, even throw sets, in exhibitions. McEnroe admits to losing games (but not matches) intentionally.

Anybody who bets on exhibitions needs his head examined.
