Jul-07-14  thegoldenband: Could someone upload R.E. Lean's games with the Colorado Defense from 1911 and 1914? I don't have a venue or opponent for the first one, but the second was against Yates at the British Championships.
Jul-07-14  thegoldenband: I've just found the opening moves to both games online, though not the full game scores. First, the 1914 game against Yates:

1. e4 Nc6 2. Nf3 f5 3. e5 d6 4. exd6 cxd6
5. d4 e5 6. dxe5 Nxe5 (eventual 1-0)

And now the 1911 game, which turns out to be from the 1911 British Championships against Parry:

1. e4 Nc6 2. Nf3 f5 3. e5 d6 4. Bb5 dxe5 5. Nxe5 Qd5 6. Bxc6+ bxc6 7. Nf3 e5 8. 0-0 e4 (0-1, 38)

Both of these partial scores were posted by Paul J. Szeligowski on Brian Wall's mailing list:

I've been reading Bruce Hayden's 'Cabbage Heads and Chess Kings' Richard lean (1867-1937) has his own wonderful chapter as the man who saved Muzio Gambit. Quite a character.

"...he played chess on the principle that is better to give than receive."
