Mar-28-10  dzechiel: Bill Batchelder used to be a regular at the Orange Chess Club back in the early '70's. I recall playing many, many games of blitz with him. He was a psychology professor at the University of California, Irvine, and we would frequently visit him on campus.

My chess buddy, Steve Roelke, and I visited him one day near lunch time, and Bill suggested we play a two game blitz match (Steve and I each to play Bill) to see who would by lunch. I played first and managed a draw. In his game, Steve had a winning move on the board, but seemed oblivious. I was about to pop trying not to kibitz, when Steve found the move and won the game. Bill bought our lunches and was more careful with his suggestions in the future.

Jan-15-15  zanzibar: <dzechiel> one of the things I love about <CG> is hearing stories like yours.

Apparently, on his way to tying for 1st with a score of 7/8 in the <American Open, Santa Monica (1978)>, John Pike suffered only one loss, to William Batchelder in the 3rd round.

I wonder who bought lunch that day?

cwcarlson: The 1978 American Open was won by Paul Whitehead and David Strauss, who beat me in the 7th round. See http://billwall.phpwebhosting.com/a....
Jun-01-17  JimNorCal: I thought he won the Paul Masson Mountain Winery tournament one year but all I could find was this report of a 4th-6th finish for 1979.

Nov-02-21  Murky: RIP Bill Batchelder. Passed away in late 2018, but nobody here took notice until now (late 2021). Was a strong master class player in the southern California area. Was also a professor of cognitive sciences at UC Irvine for over 40 years. I played lots of speed chess with Bill, and had many conversations with him on non-chess related topics. Was a good friend to me. Detailed obituary: (https://www.socsci.uci.edu/newseven...)

perfidious: Re the account of <zed>: believe Pike finished first ex aequo in 1976, with Browne.
