Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-27-10  Nietzowitsch: The oldest active player (active meaning that he has played an officially rated game within the last year, not that he is still moving) is Gerhard Vogel of Germany, who was <born in 1910>, and has a rating of 1,448.

The other player from 1910, Francisco Benko [† Jan-11-2010] of Argentina, is much higher rated — 2,036 — but his last official game was in October 2008 at the 15th Torneo Abierto, so he is no longer technically active.

Vogel’s last game was in June 2009 at the Bad Blankenburger Senioren Open, but it was not rated until September, so Vogel has a month or two to go before he drops off the active list.

Jun-27-10  ughaibu: Benko appears to have died.
Jun-27-10  Nietzowitsch: <ugh> Right, <[† Jan-11-2010]> has been my addition, I should have made it more clear... :D
Jun-27-10  ughaibu: Okay, I see what you mean.
Aug-20-10  Bridgeburner: 100 years old or near enough and still active.

alexmagnus: <that will net him 31 ELO points lifting his ELO to 1479> And it could be even more if not the stupid 400-point rule: http://ratings.fide.com/individual_...
Aug-20-10  miguelito: GO vogel
Dec-18-10  Karpova: Rest in Peace, Gerhard Vogel.

alexmagnus: So, he played his last game somewhere around three months prior to his death? That's what I call activity!

alexmagnus: But even funnier is that he got his first FIDE rating at 98.

alexmagnus: If still alive, this is the new oldest rated active player after Vogel's death:
