Born in Melbourne, Victoria, Brent came 2nd in the 1962 and 1964 Australian junior championships, and =3rd in the 1964/65 Australian championship at Hobart. He competed in the 1965 World Junior championship tournament in Barcelona, finishing 26th overall, with a score of 3/7 in the Group C final.

Brent turned to his academic studies after Barcelona, being at the Australian National University from 1972 to 1998, and then becoming Professor of Computing Science at Oxford University in 1998.
