  Phony Benoni: The death date, at least, is incorrect. HEre is an except from an article in the <Bremen [Indiana] Enquirer>, February 6, 1953:

<"John Winter of Chicago, who has four times won the city championship in chess tournaments of the Chicago Chess and Checker Club, was the guest of U. J. Dietrich. last week, returning home Monday.. Thursday night Mr. Dietrich gave devotees of the game in Bremen and Napoleon a treat in the way of an oyster supper following an evening of of chess at the Star restaurant. Mr. Winter showed wonderful activity, playing several games against local players simultaneously, giving all of them large handicaps and winning five, losing one, and drawing one. He also played a number of match games with Mr. Dietrich and others during his stay....">

If the 1874 birth date is tied to the person who died in 1950, it is likely incorrect as well.

Santasiere, annotating the game J Winter vs Santasiere, 1937 (Chess Review, October 1937, p.227) states that Winter was 75 years old at the time, indicating a birthdate of 1861/1862. That statement may not be completely accurate, but probably provides at least a ballpark figure.

That article cited by <Phony Benoni> was published in the <Bremen Enquirer>, 1953.02.05, p6, under the heading "Forty Years Ago" and was also printed 1933.01.26, p6, in the <Bremen Enquirer> under the heading "Twenty Years Ago". The article was originally published in the <Bremen Enquirer> on 1913.01.23, p1.

  jnpope: Had to check the wayback to see what we originally had for DOB and DOD:

<born Nov-29-1874, died Jan-11-1950>

Not sure what those dates were based upon, but clearly he could have died prior to 1953 as the article cited by <Phony Benoni> was no indication that he was currently alive at that time.

  jnpope: <Burton A. Dahlstrom, home after three years of army service, is the new Chicago Chess and Checker Club Champion. A very interesting, close struggle resulted in Dahlstrom's coming first with 12½-2½. Other good scores: A. C. Margolis (last year's champion) 12-3; R. Newlander (a 19-year-old youngster from whom great things are expected) 11½-3½; John Winter (grand old man of Chicago chess) 10½-4½; Earl Davidson 9½-5½.>
source: <Chess Review>, v14 n4, April 1946, p10

Apparently he was still playing at the age of 84/85 (presuming the age given in 1937 is correct).
