Mar-07-11  Albertan: Happy 136th birthday Maurice Ravel! Here is a performance of my favorite work of yours: The Piano concerto for the left hand, which was commissioned by the Austrian pianist, Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm during World War I.

Here are links to a performance of this concerto by pianist Elisso Wirssaladze

Mar-07-11  micartouse: Ravel is in my opinion a very underrated composer! I think because he basically copied Debussy's innovations and Liszt's piano techniques, he remains in their shadows. But I listen to more Ravel than both of them combined. Every note is charming and perfectly orchestrated! I think the lesson is that it's okay for an artist to be heavily influenced by a predecessor as long as the product is high quality. The 20th century was too fast a period for classical music - composers should have thought like Ravel and consolidated the new ideas instead of charging forward into entropy.

Looks like he was a decent chess player too - his loss here doesn't look so clumsy.

Mar-07-11  Jim Bartle: Maybe Ravel is underrated because he started so quietly and only built up to full volume at the very end.
Mar-07-11  BobCrisp: Come on, if it wasn't for <Torvill & Dean>, he'd have been completely forgotten. If he'd never existed, would you have missed him?
Mar-07-11  Jim Bartle: I would have, if only for his orchestration of "Pictures at an Exhibition."

Phony Benoni: Or, for an older generation, Bo Derek in <10>.
Mar-07-11  kingfu: I saw Piano Concerto for The Left Hand also at The Hollywood Bowl. Then there was Heifitz doing a violin concerto. Then there was a Haydn Symphony.

Great Stuff.

Mar-07-11  BobCrisp: <I would have, if only for his orchestration of "Pictures at an Exhibition.">

It sounds horrible. I can't listen to that.

Mar-07-11  micartouse: Bolero is an unlikely piece to have as a greatest hit - it sounds like not much more than an organist fiddling with registration. Gaspard de la Nuit - now this is quality.
Mar-08-11  kingfu: Prokofiev was very good at music as well.

Einstein v. Oppenheimer

Bogart v. Capablanca

Franklin v. Jefferson

I have a book about Franklin and there is a picture of his Chess Set. To touch those pieces would be like hearing a symphony by Ravel or Prokofiev or seeing "The Maltese Falcon" or reading about relativity or having HAL cut off my air supply.

I love this game!

Let's play Chess.

Mar-07-13  solskytz: I would have missed him, certainly...

his Valses Nobles et Sentimentales

his Sonatina

his Gaspard de la Nuit

his Tombeau de Couperin

his Pavane

his "la Valse"

his chamber music...

He created a lot of beauty. There was nobody quite like him.
