Jan-11-05  Knezh: How could this man span for over a century, let alone having beat Alekhine in 1903? Surely the latter half of the games belongs to someone else.

Jan-13-05  ThunderStorm: Yeah how could he survive that long??
May-03-05  lopium: Just an error, like for many others.

TheAlchemist: I don't know about other Slavonic languages, but in Slovenian "vinograd" means "vineyard", so that might explain his long life. He's been in some basement from 1903 to 1999, while getting better and better, just like wine does with time.
May-03-05  yoozum: "Vinograd" in Russian means "grapes", which is why this name stood out to me.

Honza Cervenka: The game from 1903 was played by another Pavel Vinogradov or sir Paul Vinogradoff. See Paul Vinogradov
Mar-10-24  MFH: This "Pavel V.", born Jan.27, 1983, is not the same as "Paul V." (born Nov.30, 1854, died Dec.19, 1925) who beat Alekhine in 1903. Although "Paul" /might/ be the same as "Pavel" in other cases. (Russian names are commonly transliterated to some standard but also replaced in everyday life by other, sometimes informal variants.) I guess it's "Paul V." the Variation of the Ruy Lopez is named after? Does anyone has a reference?
