GrahamClayton: Obituary notice from the Sydney Morning Herald, Wednesday, 3rd September 1930, page 17:

MR. WILLIAM RIDLEY.

Mr. William Ridley, who died at his home in Mosman last week, and whose funeral took place at the Northern Suburbs Cemetery, was a son of Rev. William Ridley, who was editor of the "Evening News" for many years. Mr. Ridley began his career on that paper, and in 1872 was appointed to the staff of the statistical branch of the Registrar-General's Department. On the formation of the Department of Statistics he was transferred to that office, and was for many years chief compiler and first assistant to the statistician. In 1897 he was appointed Deputy Registrar-General in charge of births, marriages, and deaths, and held the post till his retirement in 1917, at the age of 63.

In his earlier years he was a noted yachtsman. He was also a keen chess player, and represented New South Wales on various occasions in interstate competitions. Mr. Ridley, who was in his 79th year, leaves a widow.

Rev. Clive Yarrlngton, of St. Clement's, Mosman, and Rev. H. J. Noble, of St. Swithin's, Pymble, officiated at the funeral, the chief mourners being Mrs. R. M. Kidston (daughter), Mr. Kidston, Miss Y. Kidston (niece), Messrs. Claude Ridley (nephew), Clive and Lawrence Hayter, John Brown, and Haywood Richardson.
