Phony Benoni: Walter F McCaleb, Jr., had just turned 17 when he defeated Alekhine in a simul on March 21, 1929.

Sources: Brooklyn Daily Eagle, March 22 and March 28, 1929.

MissScarlett: Seems likely he was the Walter F McCaleb, who was a staff sergeant of 393rd Bombardment Squadron, and part of the ground crew for <Enola Gay> on its mission that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima: http://luckypuppy.net/the-atomic-bo...

If so, he's pictured here, third from left: http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail...

More certain is that his father was Walter Flavius McCaleb, historian, novelist, poet, and banker: https://tshaonline.org/handbook/onl...

Mar-16-16  luftforlife: <Miss Scarlett>: Good thinking there, but it's not the same fellow.

Staff Sergeant (referred to in some sources as Technical Sergeant) Walter F. McCaleb was born in Rochester, Minnesota circa 1921.

"A Rochester native, McCaleb joined the Army in 1942 right out of high school. He attended technical aircraft training in Seattle and attained the rank of sergeant."

"Rochester men had role in Enola Gay mission," Rochester Post-Bulletin, February 4, 1995.

His grave is located at Marion Cemetery in Rochester, Minnesota:

Walter F. McCaleb Jr. was a member of Columbia College Class of 1933. He played chess as an undergraduate. References to him appear in 1929 and in 1932 in the Columbia Daily Spectator.

MissScarlett: Thanks. I had seen reference to a Walter Friedrich McCaleb, born 1920, but I figured he was probably too young to be a staff sergeant and the man pictured in 1945.

A pity, because I was ready with a game title, <Little Boy Blew>.

Mar-16-16  luftforlife: <MissScarlett>: Wow, that would have been superb. Sorry to have denied you critical mass.
