Tabanus: This would be Dr. Val D. Berzzarins born Jan. 1921, Ohio Valley Open winner in 1961 and still living in Akron Ohio.

Perhaps <OhioChessFan> can confirm! :)

Phony Benoni: Definitely. He was identified as "Dr", and I just found "Val" in a 1962 USCF rating list.

GrahamClayton: Berzzarins was an active player in his native Latvia, but when he emigrated to the United States in the mid-1950's, his play was restricted to local tournaments or the US Open due to his medical studies.
