STATE OF OKLAHOMA, TO: Alpen Gardner Murphy

TAKE NOTICE that you have been sued in the above-named court by the said plaintiff, Melisande Murphy, alleging that plaintiff was induced to enter into a purported marriage in Tulsa, Oklahoma on the 15th day of October, 1962. That said marriage was induced by fraud and misrepresentation made by you to the plaintiff. That said marriage was never consumated by reason of said fraud committed by you upon the plaintiff and was in fact no marriage at all, and that plaintiff is entitled to a decree annulling said purported marriage; and you must answer said petition on or before the 4th day of November, 1963 or said petition will be taken as true and a judgment rendered for said plaintiff, granting her a decree of annullment.   GrahamClayton: Alpen "Al" Gardner Murphy, 76, an actor and singer, died of cancer on April 24 at Sibley Memorial Hospital. He lived in Arlington.

Mr. Murphy specialized in the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan and performed with repertory companies in New York and with the Washington Savoyards light opera company, the Victorian Lyric Opera Company and the Arlington Players.

He was born in Bronxville, N.Y., and attended Columbia University. He served in the Army from 1951 to 1953, stationed in Tokyo. He lived in New York until moving to the Washington area in 1983.

He was member of the Washington Chess Center, where he volunteered as a youth chess coach. He also volunteered as an English as a Second Language instructor with local nonprofit groups.

His marriages to Melisande Kopp, Connie Cooper and Kate Murray ended in divorce.
