<<Obituary.>We regret to have to record the death of Mr. H. J. Thwaites, who at one time was a prominent member and ranked as a first-class player in the Adelaide Chess Club.
He was one of the seven who played against Melbourne in the first intercolonial match by telegraph, in September, 1868, and although amongst the losers upon that memorable occasion, he made a gallant fight of it, and proved himself a worthy champion.
He also played in the second Sydney match, but was again defeated.
His success in tournament play was not very marked, though he secured a prize in each of the two last in which he took part, viz., in 1870 and '72, receiving, however, the odds of pawn and move from the first-class players.
His connection with the club may be said to have ended here, his business requiring his presence in the country, so that he has been for some time in a measure lost sight of by his old acquaintances and opponents, who we feel sure will never think otherwise than kindly of him, who has gone to his last rest at the early age of 34.
