Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-02-13  Prugno: One of the most scandalous instances of rating manipulation ("sandbagging") in recent times.

This FIDE master, who played for some years under the name of E Ausmins in order to avoid extradition from Italy back to Latvia, before being granted political asylum in our country, misteriously drops hundreds of rating points every year, throwing games against 1600-rated opponents. Then he suddenly reverts to his normal level in big-money events reserved to lower class players, such as the Gibraltar Open.

Jun-26-13  Xeroxx: strange.

alexmagnus: There is a very simple method of fighting this obvious type of sandbagging - just base rating-based prizes not on the current rating, but on the highest rating achieved. So that, more or less, you get rewarded for being better than ever.
