Stonehenge: I have found a Samuel Frucella, born on Feb 8, 1903. To make it easy I have also found a Robert and a Salvatore Robert Frucella born on the same day.

GrahamClayton: There is a Samuel Frucella who won what I believe was the 1956 Florida State Championship tournament - is this the same player?
Jan-09-18  dfrucella: Graham:

I was scrolling Google and randomly put in my father's name (Salvatore Robert Frucella - everyone called him Sam) and found your post from August and had to write.

He vacationed in Florida (to avoid the Buffalo winters) during the winter in the 1950's and 1960's and retired there in 1970. He did in fact win the S Florida championship several years in a row. The S Florida group then conspired against him and changed the dates so as not to coincide with his vacation.

He changed his vacation dates and won again!!

He was a highly respected family physician and surgeon and much loved by the Buffalo community.

perfidious: One far better known person comes to mind who was born Salvatore but nicknamed, inter alia, Sam.
Jun-02-18  rfrucel1: A work colleague of mine, who is a competitive chess player pointed me to this site when I told him of my grandfather Salvatore "Sam" Frucella's chess achievements.

It was a step back into time to be able to view his legendary game against Alekhine.

I remember him as a humble and caring man, who would spend countless hours in front of his chess board in Florida working through various chess scenarios. He truly was an incredible man who contributed greatly to the game of chess.

Dionysius1: Lovely to read that <rfrucel1>. Is <dfrucella> - see 5 posts up - your father or your uncle?
