<THE YORKSHIRE CHAMPION. It is with pleasure we give this little sketch of Mr J E Hall, who has recently won the Yorkshire championship. Mr Hall belongs to Bradford, and joined the Bradford club in 1876. Some years later he took up the game seriously, and in the first competition for the Woodhouse Cup he defeated the late Mr J W Young of Wakefield, then considered the strongest player in Yorkshire. From that time he has almost invariably played the top board for Bradford. In club tournaments, from 1885 to 1892, he has won either first or second prize. When the International Master's Tournament was held at Bradford in 1888 Mr Hall was honoured with an invitation to play, and although he did not do well in the early part of the tourney, he played well towards the close, and gained fine victories over Messrs Lee, Locock, and Thorold, also obtaining a draw with the celebrated Bardelben. Mr Hall will very probably win the West of Yorkshire Chess Association Tourney, which will be resumed this Saturday. Mr Hall's play is of the modern school, he is patient, steady, and sound. He builds up his game well, and always has an eye to position; he never goes for a «frisk,» but generally prefers a close game. Mr Hall is on the right side of forty, and we hope he may always be devoted to the royal game, which has absorbed the minds of the intellectual in every clime. We are much indebted to Mr J A Wollard (chess editor of the «Bradford Observer Budget») for the «print» of Mr J E Hall.> (Newcastle Courant, 15 April 1893)

Tabanus: There was a bio on him at the Yorkshire Chess History website. Sadly that site seems gone forever.

Is some of it retrievable from the Wayback Machine?

MissScarlett: So this is the Hall of Bradford, trailed to compete in Amsterdam (1889) but didn't show.
Jun-24-17  zanzibar: There once was a <J.E. Hall> well-connected with Bradford.

But by 1895 there was another <J.E. Hall, Esq>, associated with Henfield (Sussex), well-mentioned in <Hastings (1895)>.

Are these the same, or different, <J.E. Hall>.

And how certain are we that J.E. = John Edmund?

Jun-24-17  zanzibar: BTW - «print» - does that mean photo/illustration?

Any chance of getting a scan?

Tabanus: J. E. Hall of Bradford is not hard to find. He played for Bradford until at least 1909. The one in Henfield is another person:

<HENFIELD. THE CHESS CLUB.—The annual meeting of this club was held on Tuesday, the president in the chair. The treasurer's report was considered quite satisfactory, and passed. The President (Mr. J. Eardley Hall) was re-elected, ...> (Sussex Agricultural Express, 25 March 1892, p. 5)

Jun-27-17  zanzibar: Thanks <Tab>, some good leg work digging that out.
