  MissScarlett: Staffordshire Advertiser, November 13th 1948, p.3:

<The recent death of Mr. F. W. Markwick, who was for over forty years chess editor of the "Stratford Express,” has removed a greatly esteemed and talented chess writer from our midst. Apart from his literary activities, however, Mr. Markwick was a great organiser of clubs and matches, and was also, at one time, quite a strong player. While resident in Leyton, he founded, in 1898, the Leyton Chess Club, which quickly became one of the most powerful clubs in Essex and the London area. Mr. Markwick suddenly collapsed and died whilst playing a game with another veteran Essex player. He was 84.>
