VOLDEMARS VETRA
(born 1913) Latvia

[what is this?]

(Latvian spelling Voldemārs Vētra; known as Voldemārs Čura before World War II). He was born Voldemars Cura in Riga, Lativa, but moved to Jelgava, Latvia where he began his chess career. He won the Jelgava championship in 1937, and shortly after that he legally changed his name to Voldemars Vetra. Despite some OTB success, Vetra would gain notice mainly as a correspondence and blind tournament specialist. He competed in the first group of the 1942 Karl Behting 75th Jubilee correspondence tournament, where he scored a fine win in his game against correspondence master Janis Vilkins. All games in this event were played in the Latvian gambit, in honor of Karl Behting's lifelong research into the variation 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5. Vetra eventually achieved the title of candidate master. Always suffering from poor eyesight, Vetra gradually became legally blind. He began to compete in sight-impaired chess events. He shared 1st at the 1951 Riga sight-impaired championship, and competed again in the 1961 edition, posting an interesting win against Estonian Vello Kalde 's Caro-Kann defence. Vetra also finished fourth at the 1970 Minsk sight-impaired tournament.
