MissScarlett: Illustrated Sporting & Dramatic News, December 31st 1881, p.387:

<A few weeks ago I penned a notice of a victory achieved by Mr. John Halford in a tourney by correspondence, started by the Rev. C. E. Ranken, who generously gave £5 for the first prize; but owing to circumstances my notice was never published.

I have now the melancholy duty to announce Mr. Halford's decease, which took place at the early age of thirty-nine. Mr. Halford was a scientific player, but he was more than that: he was an unselfish lover of our game and a genial companion. He was always just and even chivalrous in his conduct. Here is a sample of it :- A few years ago he used frequently to visit Simpson's Divan, and challenge the strongest player he could find there to do battle with him. But being a slow player and determined to do his best to win, as soon as he took his seat at the board he used to mention these circumstances, if not already known to his opponent, and then observe, "As I do not wish to waste your time, or try your temper, I am willing to play you for any stake up to half a sovereign.">
