perfidious: Aha, old friend: finally found you here after all these years!

One of the fine people I met in my earliest days at the board in the Burlington chess club, in fall 1972, though we would only meet at the board for the first time in late 1975.

Paul was a strong expert level player who just missed making USCF master in the early 1970s, which would have made him the first Vermont player to earn the title. His job at IBM often had him travelling back to his native Switzerland during the 1970s, though he wound up spending much more time in Vermont, starting in 1978. We then met at the board numerous times, before he and wife Lise became snowbirds, then moved to Florida for some years.

Paul reminded me of another player, same forename in his board demeanour; one could never tell how he stood in a game by observing him. He had the same composed expression, whatever maelstrom reigned on the board--and there were many, given his love of tactical play. We had a number of slugfests across the years, but what stands out above all in my memories--and there are quite a few--is that Paul was a true gentleman, someone worthy of respect and admiration. As with John Curdo, to name merely one adversary from bygone days, one could do far worse than to emulate him as a person.

perfidious: It should be noted that there were doubtless other Vermont titles won by Paul, but I do not have a comprehensive list of title holders from that state, with evidence being spotty in the period before the Fischer boom.
