Oct-22-08  Autoreparaturwerkbau: That Colm Fella had some life!

Challenged Chigorin, probably fought in trenches of WW1, humiliated drunken Alekhine, got humiliated by almost-retired Botvinnik and then finally played Speelman.

I suppose that Colm-the-Vivid is playing basketball with his grandson right now. :)

Jan-11-11  parisattack: Yes, long career! I imagine his biography would be great reading. He gave Speelman a heck of a run considering he must have been on 100 -assuming he was a child prodigy when he battled Chigorin...

Perhaps he is the Mormon angel who decided to stay behind...

Nov-07-15  jerseybob: And yet he's rated 2262 so he's beaten someone, somewhere. It's just that chessgames.com isn't the place to find out about it!

Domdaniel: I used to know Colm Barry. Played him in offhand games, but never in a tournament. I have my doubts about the veracity of the Rossolimo game in '75.

I gather a number of (much) earlier games have been removed from this page. So maybe Rossolimo was verified? I recall talking to Barry when he went to college around '76, and he never mentioned a context where he might have met Rossolimo.

perfidious: <Dom> The game in question most likely was played in Rossolimo's final event, the 1975 World Open, held mere weeks before his death.

Not sure who White ackshly is here, but there were some competent American players in the late 20th century with the surname Barry as well.

At Memorial Day that year, I got to play the old maestro in a simultaneous display at his studio in Greenwich Village. Believe I lost the game, but have no idea what became of the score.
