EVGENY KUZMINYKH
(born Nov-03-1911, died Jul-24-1989, 77 years old) Russia

[what is this?]

Evgeny Filippovich Kuzminykh was awarded the Soviet Master of Sports title in 1941. Kuzminych began his chess career in Leningrad in the mid-1920s. In 1933 he took part in a preliminary tournament for players in the first category and finished first in his group, tied with Alexander Tolush. In the following qualifying tournament, which was held in August of the same year in Leningrad, he finished fourth, just missing the master norm. At the Leningrad City Championship 1933/34 Kuzminych was also fourth, where he was able to outperform opponents such as Alexey Sokolsky , Viacheslav Ragozin and Vitaly Chekhover in the table. In another qualifying tournament in 1940 in Moscow where he scored 7½ points from 11 games and was subsequently declared national champion .

In June 1941 Kuzminych participated for the first time in a semi-final of the Soviet championship in Rostov-on-Don . There he, like all the other participants, was surprised by the outbreak of war and was only able to bring his hanging game against David Bronstein to an end after the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Two more rounds followed before the competition was finally abandoned.

Along with Kirill Vinogradov and Nikolai Kopylov, he is considered one of the namesakes of the Leningrad system in the Dutch defense.

alexmagnus: He played the semifinals of the Soviet championship, yet Google knows next to nothing about him. One picture of him and some other players from 1944. I cannot even find out his father's name (Russian "middle name").
