jnpope: He was living in St. Paul as early as March 1893, as he is recorded as giving a simul performance at the West Side Chess Club in the <Minneapolis Journal>, 1893.03.04, p10.

MissScarlett: Regarding the time of his emigration, an online tree makes 2 points - i) no obvious UK census record for 1891; ii) the claim from the 1910 American census (unseen) that he arrived in 1888.

As can be supposed, he and his brother were a force in Bath and West Country chess circles. The last definite sighting in the press I can find for Francis is February 1888, when he turned out with his brother for a Bath YMCA - Bristol YMCA match.

I don't know if its anything more than coincidence that his game with Pollock from 1884 suddenly crops up in the <Stamford Mercury> in May 1888, or that another game (without date or location) appears in the <ISDN> in June.

The next confirmed sighting is in the <ILN> of March 1890, when, as a problem solver, he's of St. Paul, Minnesota. After which, he appears sporadically, in the same guise.

jnpope: I found a "Mr. F. A. Hill" arriving in New York 15-March-1888 from Liverpool aboard the <The Queen>, but his age is listed as being 34.

Perhaps that could be explained by a sloppy 185<9> looking like 185<4> making the resulting calculation 34 instead of 29.

Not sure if a departing passenger list can be found on the UK side.

I did find the 1910 and 1900 census records, both confirming that he listed his arrival as being in 1888 (he was also listed as being a clerk/accountant for the railroad industry).

jnpope: The Charleston <Sunday News>, 1891.12.06, p7, reports "In the tournament, now in progress, of the St Paul Chess Club Dr A. T. Bigelow leads with seven won games, followed by Mr F. A. Hill with three won and two lost."

So he was in St. Paul as early as 1891. It's still unclear where he was between landing in New York in 1888 and the earliest US chess related report placing him in St. Paul in Nov-1891 (the tournament begin in November according to Steinitz in the <International Chess Magazine>, v7, p325. The report he uses comes from the St. Paul <Pioneer Press>; a source unavailable to me through the sites of which I have access.

MissScarlett: The Bath YMCA played another match on March 22nd 1888 and <F A Hill> is absent whilst <W E> plays. Seems little doubt that it's him aboard the <Queen>.
