'Der Deutsche Meister Theobald Hess (1892-1945)'

1920 wurde Theobald Hess Schwäbischer Meister (ein Titel, den er bis 1938 mehrmals erlangte). 1921 gewann er die Süddeutsche Meisterschaft und den 20. Schwäbischen Schachkongress. 1922 wurde er Deutscher Meister.

Hess, der ebenfalls für den Schachverein Ulm/Neu-Ulm spielte, war 1921 als Studienassessor tätig. In späteren Jahren wechselte Hess nach Stuttgart, wo er eine Arbeit als Gymnasiallehrer aufnahm. 1928 war er württembergischer Schachmeister, Stuttgarter Schachmeister und württembergischer Billiardmeister.

Hess war nicht nur erfolgreicher Schachspieler, sondern auch Problemkomponist. Bis zu seinem Tod galt er als der spiritus rector des württembergischen Schachlebens. Er fiel 1945 im 2. Weltkrieg als Major in Berlin (Im Buch Schach in Württemberg ist das Todesjahr auf 1943 datiert).

Theobald Hess (or Heß) was never 'champion of Germany', (1922 won Ehrhardt Post the Congress), the D.S.B. only awarded him with the 'master title'!

<1921 gewann er ... den 20. Schwäbischen Schachkongress.>

Also not right - at the end of December 1920 Hess won together with Elison the Congress.
