  GrahamClayton: Max Wilkerson served as the Mechanics’ Institute (San Francisco, CA) Chess Director from 1980 to 1996. Among the highlights were the 1987, 1991 and 1995 Pan Pacific Internationals, which included players like Mikhail Tal and Viktor Korchnoi. He was the champion of Colorado in 1954 and New Mexico in 1959.

Wilkerson earned a Master’s in Fine Arts in Mexico in the early 1950s, and soon after receiving his degree moved to New York City to further his development.
