perfidious: First heard the second WC Fields quote from a friend many years ago, but never knew it was attributed to him.

As to the subject of this page, I remember playing him in the 1987 New York Open. He was White in a Veresov and got nothing from the opening or middlegame. We wound up in a double-rook ending where I was the only one with any slight winning chance and he offered a draw six times. By the last proposal, there was not much left to play for, but I almost told him to stuff it out of irritation.

Feb-01-13  Paul H. Fields: Well, Alan, to paraphrase my distant relative, W.C., a 26-year-old whine must come from exceptionally sour grapes. Cheers!

Domdaniel: Au contraire, a 26-year-old whine is a rare vintage. Though I quite liked the book on the Barcza-Larsen.
