A report on the Lugano open (1986), CHESS May 1986 say Daniel Sorm is (was?) Austrian. (here he is Czechoslovakian)

Apparently he was involved in a bribe scam with Florin Gheorghiu who offered half his proze money if Sorm resigned. This report claims this event was witnessed.

The game was adjourned, Sorm 'played five indifferent moves' and resigned.

This was brought to the arbiters attention and both players were double defaulted. However upon appeal Gheorghiu had his win reinstated.

Looked at Lugano Open at https://www.365chess.com/tournament... Gheorghiu is there but no Sorm. (strange).

Feb-07-19  Gejewe: <Sally Simpson> I have played in that particular Lugano open in 1986 and remember the incident. Daniel Sorm was a regular in tournaments in those days (remember to have seen him in Bad Mondorf and other events as well) but it seems to have been for a short time. He has been around again recently as I noticed.

Both Gheorghiu and Sorm were playing there. But the 365chess.com list that you are linking to is not complete. I see my name and those of others with very few points. Considering the total number of games, this are probably the games that were published in the bulletin. I see myself quoted with 2 1/2 points but for example Antunes (whom I lost to) with 1 point ! So when you have no game in the bulletin, you are not there and that seems to have been Sorm's fate.

Hi Gejewe,

Always good to get an eye witness account.

Thought it needed clearing up, Austrian instead of Czechoslovakian and no games. (could see right away the games list was not complete so suspected he was there but with no game being recorded.)

Appears Danny Sorm changed federations sometime in the past.
