Nino Kirov Ivanov was born in Gorna Dzhumaya (now Blagoevgrad), Bulgaria. Awarded the IM title in 1971 and the GM title in 1975/ he was Bulgarian Champion in 1978 after a play-off. He played on the Bulgarian Olympiad teams of 1974 and 1984 and in tournaments he was 1st at Coka 1973, 1st= at Vrsac 1974, 2nd= at Potsdam 1985 and 3rd= at Rome 1986.
