Zhou was equal first in the 8th Asian Continental Chess Championship (2009) alongside Surya Shekhar Ganguly, thereby qualifying for the World Cup (2009), where he defeated Emil Sutovsky in the first round before losing to Gata Kamsky in the second. He came =3rd (9th on tiebreak) with 6.5/9 at the HD Bank Open in March 2013.
