JERRY SIMON
(born Dec-12-1942, died May-24-2006, 63 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

Jerry C. Simon was among the strongest U.S. amateurs. Known for preparation and tenacity over the board, he won the annual championship of the Marshall Chess Club in New York in 1983. In October 2001 he entered the U.S. Senior Open, held on a ship offshore California, and came in first in a field of 44 after defeating opponents including Grandmaster Anatoly Lein. A frequent entrant in tournaments, records indicate that Simon played in 456 rated events since the beginning of 1991, and probably hundreds more in the three decades before that.

"Jerry Simon was liked by everyone", wrote Douglas Bellizzi, president of the Marshall Chess Club. "He was soft-spoken, but a fierce competitor at the chessboard".

"Sessions with Simon often involved protracted trench warfare", wrote Jeffery Tannenbaum, vice president of the Marshall Chess Club. "He was hard to defeat. Several years ago, when games often were adjourned after move 40 and resume a day or more later, his penchant for study brought him extra triumphs. His weapon was no secret: a well-used set of Informants, the chess periodical from Yugoslavia".
