LoveThatJoker: David Gertler was Yasser Seirawan's assistant in the educational video production called "Pro Chess Mentor" from 1987.

I believe this video is a must-own for any improving chess player.

Jul-12-14  Howard: Gertler and I played a postal (as it was called back then !) game back in 1984, and he blew me right off the board.

Anyone know what became of him ? He was certainly a pleasure to play with, for we "chit-chatted" about chess when exchanging moves.

perfidious: Used to see Gertler in the US Amateur Team East events when they were held at Somerset, New Jersey, though we never met.
Jul-12-14  Granny O Doul: I was a bit jarred to see that he just played in the Senior Championship, remembering when he made CL's cover for co-winning the Junior Open. Of course, I'm not sure why that rated the cover, but USCF does like to hype its own events and there was the contrast between the co-winners (a ~13-yr-old Stuart Rachels being the other).
Dec-07-14  Howard: Yes, I remember that cover---it was in 1982. Joel Benjamin, by the way, also made that same cover for winning the U.S. Junior (closed) championship.
Mar-24-16  randomo: Hmm - an eclectic collection of my games. At least I have an even record in them. (Hi, Howard!)
Mar-24-16  Howard: Hi, Dave ! (assuming that's you).

So, have you given up chess? If not, what are you doing nowadays. Still remember you worked at USCF back in the mid-1980's, and you occasionally got your picture in the B&E catalog.

May-21-16  randomo: Hi Howard,

Nice to bump into you here after all these years! I play just a couple tournaments a year now, usually the US Amateur Team East and the Delaware Championship. Most of my chess consists of 3-minute games on ICC when I want to unwind after a stressful day at school (I'm a teacher).

I think I still have the moves of our postal game somewhere, if you want me to prove my identity. ;-)

-Dave

P.S. to "Granny O Doul" - if you think it was jarring for you to see me playing in the US Senior, imagine how _I_ felt playing in it!!

Sep-26-17  Howard: Gertler had a letter in the most recent issue of New in Chess (#6). He seemed to recall having seen Judith Polgar briefly back at the 1985 NY Open when playing one of her older sisters. But, as the magazine said in response, it was actually someone else whom he'd seen.

Here's to that, though I would more likely play in senior poker events than chess, except for possibly the World Senior. Good reason to go to Europe.
