Fusilli: According to Tibor Karolyi ("Karpov Strategic Wins 1"), Leonid Gratvol was Karpov's first coach. They didn't see each other often (Karpov lived more than two hours away by train), but Gratvol was the main coach in the area and Karpov checked in with him and processed his teacher's wisdom quickly. Gratvol trained kids, and several of his pupils went on to become grandmasters: Sveshnikov, Timoschenko, Panchenko, Dvoirys and Shumiakina were his pupils. He was awarded the title of "Honoured Trainer" of the Russian Republic. There are brief letters from Sveshnikov and Panchenko in Karolyi's book where they remember Gratvol fondly.

<"I started to work with him (Karpov) in 1961 when he was nine years old and trained him for three and a half years. Our involvement stopped when the family moved from Chelyabinsk area to Tula. I immediately noticed that he was a very talented boy.">
