TheAlchemist: <HeMateMe> Woah, you opened a Pandora's box there :-)

There are so many awful covers, many, many more than good ones. The absolute worst I've had the misfortune of hearing are more recent takes, like Madonna's American Pie, Hilary Duff's My Generation, Celine Dion's You Shook Me All Night Long, Limp Bizkit's Behind Blue Eyes, Britney Spears' I Love Rock'n'Roll and probably others I can't recall right now. Kid Rock's All Summer Long, though not strictly a cover, would also hold a special place. My advice would be stay away from the classics, unfortunately no one listens to me :-)

What pisses me off is that some young musically uneducated listeners think the cover is actually an original! Blasphemy!

<Joan Baez singing Zeppelin?> It's actually the other way round :-)

Aug-29-09  Jim Bartle: There's a special space, somewhere, for Kid Rock's "All Summer Long," a double ripoff.

Another triple "hit" would be "Not Fade Away": Buddy Holly, Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead. Each quite different.

And that's a good joke--the idea of Hilary Duff singing My Generation! What an idea!

TheAlchemist: <Jim> The worst (if there's one) part of that one is that she sings the "I hope I die before I get old" part, to me the essence of the song, as "I hope I don't die..."

Me and my sister actually have a rather "twisted" habit of sometimes listening to these awful songs by wannabe popstars, boy/girl bands, though most are from our country, and laugh our asses off at the horrible lyrics, singing etc.

TheAlchemist: I don't remember which composer said it, but when he was listening to a piece by a colleague, which incorporated many stolen parts from different compositions, he remarked (paraphrased): "What do people come up with, when they have no ideas."
Aug-29-09  Jim Bartle: What? She sings "Hope I DON'T die"? Talk about flipping the meaning of a song.
Aug-29-09  Dredge Rivers: <Jim Bartle> re: Talkin' Bout My Generation.

Hilary Duff may be annoying, but if the Who were to perform that song now they'd have to change the lyrics to "Hope I die before I get REALLY old!" :)

TheAlchemist: I have always understood the "old" part not in terms of age, but as in being like the previous generation they were rebelling against. In any case, they've probably become just as grumpy now, it's inevitable :-)

HeMateMe: <TheAlchemist> I know Pandora personally, I hope she doesn't take umbrage at your comment...<Celine Dion's> cover of AC/DC won 'Worst cover song ever done' by a music survey. Might have been performed by rolling Stone magazine, not sure.

Worst covers ever? I saw a special on TV as a teenager, wherein Tony Randall, Bernadette Peters and one other person sang Beatles songs for an hour. I think there should have been a mandatory 6 month jail sentence for this. Some or all of it might be on youtube, should you be morbidly curious.

I just realized, this site--fogarty--a reference to John Fogerty, the superb songwriter for CCR? A good choice for a music page!

OhioChessFan: I've studied a lot of great people over the years - Pete Seeger, James Brown - and tried to incorporate elements that I've admired, though I can't say I dance like James.

OhioChessFan: Met myself a comin' county welfare line.
I was feelin' strung out, Hung out on the line.
Saw myself a goin', down to war in June.
All I want, All I want is to write myself a tune.

Chorus:
Wrote A Song For Ev'ryone,
Wrote a song for truth.
Wrote A Song For Ev'ryone
And I couldn't even talk to you.

Got myself arrested, Wound me up in jail.
Richmond 'bout to blow up, Communication failed.
If you see the answer, now's the time to say.
All I want, All I want is to get you down to pray.

Chorus

Chorus

Saw the people standin' thousand years in chains.
Somebody said it's diff'rent now,
Look, it's just the same.
Pharoahs spin the message,
Round and round the truth.
They could have saved a million people, How can I tell you?

Chorus
