MissScarlett: Another mysterious Belgian. Usually styled <de Rives>.

jnpope: Possibly: F. de Rives (engineer from Bruxelles who ended up patenting a boat filter in 1872)?

jnpope: Nope, not F. de Rives (the engineer).

However, von der Lasa gives "L. de Rives" in <Verzeichniss meiner Sammlung von Schriften über das Schachspiel>, Weisbaden 1887, p31:

https://books.google.com/books?id=R...

Which is the first time an initial has been given for his first name.

  jnpope: And <Neue Berliner Schachzeitung>, v6, 1869, p133 also gives "L. de Rives":

MissScarlett: Or <Stonehenge>. Alternatively, we need some more European correspondents.

mifralu: Games 1-8 fit perfectly for match/series of 8 games, Staunton - De Rives (+5 -1 =2), but Rod Edwards has →

<I do not know whether this was considered a formal match.>

jnpope: I propose a name change to <de Rives> as all the sources I've checked, in English, German, and French, all identify him as "de Rives" so I'm fairly certain that is correct.

I'm less certain about adding the first initial, but "L." is the best we've got so far.
