GrahamClayton: Malcolm Barker was a "could-have been" of British chess, after winning the British U-18 title in 1949, 1950, and 1951, and finishing second in the first World Junior Championship,. held in Coventry and Birmingham in 1951.

Here is a photo of the competitors at the 1949 British U-18 title, with Barker holding the shield in the centre of the photo:

Barker gave up playing chess in the mid 1950's.

Oct-28-19  Cibator: As is too often the case, that link takes you only to the "Home" page of the site in question. The picture itself still has to be searched for, and there seems to be no way of doing it from there.
Nov-17-19  Caissanist: Chess.com is running a three part series on Barker, with many games and photos. Here are the first two installments:

Nov-23-19  Caissanist: The final installment of the chess.com series has been posted, much of it written by Barker himself: https://www.chess.com/blog/simaginf... .
Nov-23-19  Caissanist: I found it interesting that Barker achieved what he did while receiving, by his own account, very little "study and advice", and only playing half the year (he preferred tennis during the warm months). I can't imagine such a thing happening today. He must have had an extraordinary natural gift for the game.
Nov-27-19  Everett: Thank you <Caissanist> for your posts and work! Any more games available of this remarkable talent?
Nov-27-19  simaginfan: Thanks for the free advertising!!! All of his remaining known games are in my articles - not many as his records were lost many years ago. P.S. the 1949 picture is not of him holding the trophy. Mr. Barker is 2 to the right of the boy holding the trophy in the picture - have not yet corrected that point on the relevant article page - will correct as soon as I can. Cheers. Simaginfan.
