Jan-08-09  paavoh: He passed away in fall 2008. I met him in my youth in 1980s - being able to draw first in a simul and then later in a regular game. RIP Derik!

"Lardot war 26 Jahre lang Mathematiklehrer in Oulu (Nordfinnland), wo er heute in selbst gewählter Einsamkeit lebt. Täglich 5 Stunden Lektüre und 2 Stunden Schach, wofür (und wovon) er lebt. Er spielt, wo immer Turniere stattfinden. Seine Spezialvariante ist der 2.c3 – Sizilianer. Am Morgen des dritten oder vierten Wettkampftages saßen wir beim Frühstück zusammen, und ich sagte: „Da drüben sitzt Eduardas Rozentalis, der Verfasser des Buchs über den c3-Sizilianer“. Lardot sprang sofort auf und ging gleich hinüber zu Rozentalis, um ihn zu begrüßen, und an den Tisch zurückkehrend sagte er dann stolz, er habe schon 2.c3 gespielt, als Rozentalis noch nicht geboren gewesen sei." --> http://www.schachlinks.com/cgi-bin/...

May-10-09  acirce: It was sad to learn about his death. I met him at several tournaments. As in, met him in person, I don't think I ever played him. He really played a lot. Don't know if it was always like that but some years he must have played much more than even Ivanchuk does now. And certainly used to play the games out.
