Mar-15-07  AAAAron: This guy is quite the player. His style is reflective of his name. Pure power! I only wonder what his first name is. I'm going to guess Porfirio, yes, Porfirio Powers! I'd bet $10,000 that Powers could beat Kramnik in a series! <Any Takers>?
Mar-15-07  Resignation Trap: This is the late Averill Powers, chess champion of Wisconsin in 1943, 1945, 1950 and 1954.
Mar-15-07  AAAAron: Thanks <Resignation Trap>!!! I guess, unfortunately, we will never see Powers beat Kramnik in a series. If he was the chess champ of Wisconsin, then there must be more of his games out there. How did chessgames.com aquire this one?
Mar-15-07  Resignation Trap: The game Powers-Dake appears in many book of short games of chess.
Mar-15-07  AAAAron: <Trap> You have an awesome book collection! Do you have the original print of Fischer's My 60 most memorable games. That book is hard to come by!
Mar-15-07  Resignation Trap: <AAAAron> Yes, I have Fischer's book in paperback. I also have the (unauthorized) Russian translation of that book, printed shortly before his 1972 match vs. Spassky. One of Bobby's pet peeves through the years has been the fact that he never received any royalties for the translation of his book to Russian.

Ivana: <Do you know how we keep warm in Russia?>

Austin: <I can guess, baby. <<>>>

Ivana: <We play chess.>

Austin: <I guessed wrong. <<>>>

Feb-15-09  Kpowers101: I am Averill Powers' daughter, and I have all his chess games as well as his chess editorials that he wrote for the Milwaukee Journal for at least 15 years. It was called "The Game of Kings." Samuel Reshevsky who was Western World Chess champion, and Bobby Fischer stayed at our home when they had tournaments in Milwaukee. Dad had a photographic memory and was an ace at blind fold chess sometimes playing 35 - 40 players at once. We traveled to Cuba, Guatemala & many other places for tournaments.
Sep-10-10  CambridgeSprings1904: For an example of one of Powers's chess columns, follow this link: http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...

By the way, chess is alive and well in Milwaukee, with a very active youth chess scene. I'm sure Mr. Powers is smiling down on us from above.

May-23-11  Kittysafe: Averill Powers is my grandfather, and I'm building a website of 120 of his other games on a website for him now, it's at http://powers.kittysafe.net if anyone would like to enjoy some of those other games. I am still working on translating them from descriptive to algebraic, so if anyone would like to help, feel free to email em at kittysafe at gmail ! Much appreciated!
